A headache does not always begin in the head.
Sometimes it arrives after a day of sitting, jaw clenching, walking on hard floors, gripping through the calves, or carrying tension through the shoulders. Sometimes it comes with a tight neck. Sometimes the lower back is involved too. This is where the body becomes interesting, because the site of pain is not always the full story.
One of the most useful maps for understanding this is the superficial back line — a continuous myofascial pathway described in modern anatomy and movement therapy. It runs from the underside of the foot, up the calves and hamstrings, through the sacrum and lower back, along the spine and neck, and into the connective tissue of the scalp and forehead. Anatomical reviews have found strong evidence for several myofascial connections within this line, particularly between the plantar fascia, calf, hamstrings and lumbar fascia/erector spinae region.[13]
Alongside this modern anatomy map, there is an older map from traditional acupuncture: the Bladder meridian. It begins near the inner corner of the eye, travels over the head, down the back, through the buttock and posterior leg, and ends at the little toe. In traditional Chinese medicine, this channel has long been used for patterns involving the back, neck, head and posterior body.
The two maps are not identical. One is an anatomical connective tissue pathway; the other is a traditional therapeutic channel. Yet they run through remarkably similar territory: the back of the body, the spine, the posterior leg and the foot. That overlap is one reason I find this area so valuable in Myofascial Flow Therapy™️.
What Is the Superficial Back Line?
The superficial back line is often described as a “sole-to-skull” pathway. It includes the plantar fascia under the foot, the Achilles tendon and calf complex, the hamstrings, the sacrotuberous ligament, the thoracolumbar fascia, the spinal extensors, the neck fascia and the epicranial fascia over the head.[14]
In everyday language, it is the long back-body line that helps you stand upright, bend forward, walk, spring, balance and orient your head in space.
The plantar fascia itself is a strong sheet of connective tissue that supports the arch of the foot and runs from the heel toward the toes.[8] It also has a functional relationship with the Achilles tendon and calf complex, meaning that changes in foot tension, ankle mobility or calf tone can influence how force travels through the lower limb.[8]
Higher up, the thoracolumbar fascia is a major connective tissue structure in the lower back. It helps transfer load between the trunk, pelvis and limbs, and contains nociceptive nerve endings that may contribute to some forms of back pain.[20]
This matters because fascia is not just packing material. Deep fascia is richly supplied with sensory receptors and nerve endings, making it relevant to proprioception, pain perception, movement comfort and nervous system feedback.[19]
Why the Feet Can Influence the Back, Neck and Head
The foot is not separate from the rest of the body during movement. Every step asks the plantar fascia, Achilles tendon, calf, hamstrings, pelvis and spine to coordinate timing, load and balance.
Research into myofascial chains has shown that working with the plantar surface of the foot can have measurable effects beyond the foot itself. Studies on self-myofascial release of the plantar fascia have reported immediate changes in hamstring and lumbar flexibility, supporting the idea that mechanical or sensory input at the sole may influence the wider superficial back line.[23]
This does not mean the foot is always the cause of a headache or lower back pain. It means the foot can be a useful entry point into a larger sensory and movement system.
For example, someone with recurring lower back tension may also have tight calves, restricted ankle movement or a gripping pattern through the soles of the feet. Someone with headaches may have neck and shoulder tension, but may also show tension through the posterior chain — from the hamstrings to the spine and suboccipital tissues at the base of the skull.
The body is not a collection of separate parts. It is a responsive system of tissue, nerves, movement habits, breath and attention.
The Bladder Meridian: An Ancient Map of the Back Body
In acupuncture theory, the Bladder meridian is one of the longest channels in the body. It travels from the head, down both sides of the spine, through the back of the legs and into the outer edge of the foot.
This makes it clinically relevant in traditional acupuncture for complaints involving:
Headaches
Neck stiffness
Shoulder tension
Lower back discomfort
Sciatic-type patterns
Hamstring and calf tightness
Foot and ankle sensitivity
General back-body tension
Some well-known points near the foot and ankle include:
BL60 Kunlun — located between the outer ankle bone and the Achilles tendon.
BL62 Shenmai — located below the outer ankle bone.
BL67 Zhiyin — located near the outer corner of the little toenail.
In acupuncture practice, points along the distal part of a meridian — the foot or hand — are often used for symptoms higher along the same channel. This is one reason a practitioner might stimulate a point near the foot for a headache, neck pattern or spinal tension.
Modern research does not confirm meridians as physical tubes or anatomical lines in the way we can dissect fascia, nerves or blood vessels. However, acupuncture has been studied as a sensory and neurophysiological intervention, and systematic reviews suggest it may help some people with frequent episodic or chronic tension-type headache.
A Cochrane-linked review also reported that acupuncture may be as effective as, or more effective than, preventive medication for migraine in some contexts, with fewer adverse effects. That does not make acupuncture a guaranteed headache cure, but it does place it within a serious research conversation about non-pharmacological pain care.
How Could Foot Stimulation Help a Headache?
There are several possible explanations, and they can sit alongside each other.
Through the nervous system
Touch, pressure and vibration stimulate sensory receptors in the skin, fascia, muscles and joints. Manual therapy research suggests these forms of input can influence pain through spinal cord mechanisms, changes in tissue sensitivity and descending pain modulation pathways.
In simple terms, gentle stimulation can change the quality of messages travelling from the body to the brain. When the nervous system receives clear, safe, non-threatening sensory input, muscle tone and pain sensitivity may shift.
Through the superficial back line
If the plantar fascia, calf, hamstrings, lower back and neck are part of a continuous myofascial chain, then the sole of the foot is a practical access point. Stimulating the foot may help the body soften protective holding patterns through the posterior chain, especially when combined with breath, stillness and careful pacing.
Through traditional point selection
In the Bladder meridian system, points around the ankle and little toe are traditionally associated with the back body, head and neck. In Myofascial Flow Therapy, I do not use these points as a stand-alone formula. I use them as part of a wider body map, guided by comfort, tissue response, client feedback and the intention to calm the system.
Through relaxation and autonomic regulation
Pain often increases when the nervous system is on alert. Gentle manual therapy may influence autonomic balance, including reduced sympathetic arousal and increased parasympathetic activity.[6] This is one reason people often describe feeling quieter, warmer, heavier or more settled after treatment.
How I Use These Ideas in Myofascial Flow Therapy
Myofascial Flow Therapy is a gentle, clothed therapy using a weighted tuning fork and careful contact along selected soft-tissue areas of the superficial back line. The work often begins at the soles of the feet, because the foot is both mechanically important and neurologically rich.
The weighted tuning fork provides mechanical vibration. That vibration is not mystical; it is sensory input. It gives the nervous system a clear signal through the tissues, much like a steady rhythm can help settle breathing or a calm hand can help the body feel safe.
In a session, I may work with:
The central plantar fascia
The medial and lateral soft tissues of the sole
The heel area, avoiding direct pressure on sensitive bony points
The Achilles and calf line
The hamstring pathway
The sacral and lower back region
The thoracolumbar fascia

These acupuncture point locations are used as reference points, not as the whole treatment. The main focus is gentle sensory stimulation, nervous system regulation, body awareness and comfort through the posterior fascial line.
The work is never forced. There is no aggressive digging, no attempt to “break up” fascia, and no claim that tissue is being physically melted or released. Modern manual therapy research increasingly points toward neurophysiological mechanisms: mechanoreceptor stimulation, changes in pain processing, altered muscle tone and improved movement confidence.[3]

For headache-prone clients, the aim is to reduce contributing tension patterns through the feet, posterior chain, neck and nervous system. For lower back clients, the focus is often the sole-to-spine relationship: how the plantar fascia, calf, hamstrings and thoracolumbar fascia may be contributing to the way the back feels.
Why This Approach Appeals to Both Science and Tradition
The superficial back line gives us an anatomy-based explanation for why the feet, legs, spine, neck and head can influence one another. The Bladder meridian gives us a traditional clinical map that has recognised this back-body relationship for centuries.
The overlap is clinically interesting, but it should be handled with care. Fascia and meridians should not be presented as the same thing. Fascia is visible anatomical tissue. Meridians are traditional therapeutic pathways. Myofascial Flow Therapy respects both by using modern anatomy as the foundation, while allowing selected acupuncture point locations to enrich the treatment map.
This is where the work becomes quietly powerful. A point near the outer ankle may be relevant because of its place in the Bladder meridian tradition. The same area may also be relevant because it sits close to the Achilles tendon, calf fascia, ankle sensory receptors and the lower end of the superficial back line.

A Gentle Therapy for a Body That Has Been Holding Too Much
Many people arrive for treatment after living with tension for months or years. They have stretched their hamstrings, rubbed their neck, changed pillows, taken painkillers, pushed through exercise or ignored the early signs until the body became louder.
Myofascial Flow Therapy offers a different pace.
The session gives the body steady, non-invasive input through the feet and back-body line. It invites the nervous system to downshift. It encourages the posterior chain to feel connected again. It gives attention to areas that are often missed when we chase pain only where it shouts the loudest.
For headaches, neck tension, shoulder holding or lower back discomfort, the feet may seem like an unexpected place to begin. Yet anatomically, neurologically and traditionally, they make sense.
The sole is not just the bottom of the body. It is one of the body’s main contact points with the ground, a sensory gateway into posture, balance and the back line. When the feet soften, the rest of the body often listens.
